I’ve recently decided to make an effort to lead a more holistic and natural lifestyle including not only what I eat, but self care and paying attention to what type of products I use on my body and in my home. This is definitely going to be a gradual process and I don’t know how it will pan out (smile), but I’ll be posting updates along my journey.
My latest addition to natural self care is a daily regime of dry skin brushing. For those of you unfamiliar with this practice, it’s brushing the skin while dry with a natural fiber skin brush using vigorous circular motions (upward strokes for men) starting from the feet and moving upwards towards the heart. I actually discovered this natural acne remedy by accident. I started taking fish oil to relieve dry eyes and over the period of a few months I realized I wasn’t getting cystic pimples during my monthly cycle anymore. I’ve tested it out by not taking it some months and sure enough my monthly breakouts come back and right on schedule. I’ve also tried flaxseed oil the vegan alternative but it doesn’t provide the same results. Flaxseed oil is great for other things though, I’ll blog about that some other time.
No one seems to know exactly how or why it works but among the many health benefits of fish oil it reduces inflammation which probably plays a large part in why it’s so effective on this type of agitated acne. Thanks to this stuff I no longer have to rely on oral antibiotics (which never worked 100% anyway) and their terrible side effects. Go figure, all those dermatologists I’ve seen over the years and little ol’ me cured it myself
I take 2000 mg (usually 2 capsules) daily beginning 5 days before my next menstrual is due and continue taking it until it ends and I repeat this every month. If I do this I don’t get any cysts, not even one.
When selecting fish oil you should try to go with one of the top brands to help ensure you’re using a supplement that has high quality fish oil that has gone through proper filtration measures to remove toxins and has no added fillers.
The most important aspects of a great face is good skin and well groomed brows. Two of my skincare staples are Kheil’s Calendula Herbal Extract Alcohol-Free Toner and Rare Earth Pore Cleansing Masque. I use these at least twice a month. These skin treatments are so good they provide that clean glowy look you get right after a good professional facial.
After cleansing my skin I steam my face over a bowl of just boiled hot water with a towel draped over my head to keep the steam in for about 15 minutes. Next I apply the Rare Earth masque and after 15 minutes I remove the face mask with a warm dampened washcloth. Scrubbing the mask off with a washcloth provides additional exfoliation which aids in the bright clean look I love. I apply the Kheil’s toner with a cotton ball followed with Dinur HydraXtract C Moisturizer but any good moisturizer will do and walla bright glowy deeply cleansed skin at the fraction of the cost and time of a professional facial.
